One-Item Halloween Costumes: Buy One Thing and Be Done

Here's the rule: You get one thing. Everything else has to come from clothes you already own.

Why One Thing?

Because a supposedly easy costume stops being easy when the shopping list becomes hat + makeup + gloves + shoes + prop + wig + three things you will lose before next October.

The One-Thing Rule

Ask: If I add this to normal clothes, will people understand that I'm intentionally dressed for Halloween?

If yes, it qualifies. If it requires four more purchases to make sense, it doesn't.

Test It Without the Extra Stuff

Imagine the costume without special makeup, special shoes, a wig, a prop or extra accessories. Does your one item still carry the idea? Good.

Use Ordinary Clothes for Everything Else

That makes the costume easier to wear, cheaper to assemble and easier to abandon when you've had enough.

The Storage Test

Your one addition should ideally be easy to store until next year — or useful for something else.
