Halloween without the hassle

I Really Don't Want to Dress Up: Minimum-Participation Halloween

You don't hate Halloween. You just don't particularly want to dress up. Unfortunately, somebody has decided that participation would be nice. Okay.

The Fastest Answer

Wear your normal clothes. Add one unmistakably Halloween-ish element. That's it.

The Minimum-Participation Test

Ask: What is the smallest change I can make that clearly says, “Yes, I am participating”?

Level 0: Buy Nothing

Check what you already own. If something can create a recognizable Halloween idea with your normal clothes, use it.

Level 1: Add One Thing

If Level 0 doesn't work, add one thing. Prefer something obvious, easy to wear, easy to remove, easy to store and compatible with normal clothes.

Level 2: Good Enough

Would a reasonable person understand that you made some attempt at Halloween? Yes? You're finished. Do not turn success into another 45 minutes of shopping.

Level 3: Full Costume

Only continue if the event genuinely requires it, you actually want one, there's a contest or theme you care about, or the convenience is worth it.

The SHITAKUNAI Rule

Use what you have. Add one thing if necessary. Upgrade only when it matters. Stop when the problem is solved.

The Short Version

The goal isn't maximum Halloween. It's minimum sufficient Halloween.
