Halloween without the hassle

I Have to Dress Up for Halloween at Work. Ugh.

Halloween is fun. You just don't particularly want to spend a workday inside a costume. We can work with that.

The Fastest Answer

Wear your normal work clothes and add one obvious, removable costume element.

The goal is not maximum Halloween. The goal is clearly participating without making your job harder.

The 5-Second Escape Test

Can you return to normal work mode in about five seconds?

If an important meeting appears, a client walks in, or you simply get tired of the costume, you should be able to remove the Halloween part quickly.

The $0 Route

Start with your closet. A hat, jacket, scarf, pair of glasses or other distinctive item you already own may be enough to turn ordinary work clothes into a recognizable idea.

The One-Thing Route

If what you own gets you most of the way there, add one clear item instead of rebuilding the whole outfit.

The Boss Test

Ask: Would I be comfortable unexpectedly talking to my boss, a client or a customer while wearing this?

If not, simplify.

Don't Let the Costume Do Your Job

Avoid anything that interferes with seeing, hearing, walking, sitting, typing, talking, using equipment or interacting normally with people. Your workplace's dress and safety rules always win.

The Short Version

Normal work clothes. One obvious removable element. Pass the Boss Test. Pass the 5-Second Escape Test. Go back to work.
